The steps

  1. Île Saint-Louis

Start on the quieter quays and reach the island’s eastern end to open the day beside the Seine.

  2. Bassin de l’Arsenal

Follow the marina from Bastille towards the waterside gardens.

  3. Canal Saint-Martin

Follow the locks, cross footbridges and pause near Jardin Villemin.

  4. Bassin de la Villette

Finish on the basin’s broad quays as the light stretches over the water.

Let the footbridges organise the walk

The landscape changes between the Seine, basins and locks. Leave time for Canal Saint-Martin’s footbridges, which give continuity between larger stretches of water.

A shorter version

Start at Bassin de l’Arsenal and follow Canal Saint-Martin. The Seine islands can make a separate, more monumental walk.
